Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or surgery of the eyelids, is performed to improve the appearance of excess skin and fullness around the eyes that results from normal aging. Bulging around the eyes is often due to excess fat pouching forward. This fat is unnecessary for the health of your eyes and is removed during blepharoplasty surgery.

Excess skin and fat are typically removed during upper lid surgery. Surgery of the lower lids can remove just fat, just skin, or both, depending on your needs. The operation typically is done on an outpatient basis at a local surgery center. Some bruising and swelling is expected following surgery, but this typically resolves within two weeks. Incisions are hidden in the natural folds around the eyes, so scarring is minimal.
